Purposeful Learning at the Mud Kitchen
Each day, our Foundation Stage children take part in purposeful indoor and outdoor play. This week, they enjoyed hands-on learning in our mud kitchen area, developing skills across all aspects of the SPICE model — Social, Physical, Intellectual, Creative and Emotional.
Social
The children worked together to lift and transport bags of soil, taking turns with the wheelbarrow and supporting one another throughout the task.
Physical
They strengthened both gross and fine motor skills as they carried, opened and emptied the soil and used their feet to stamp it down.
Intellectual
The children demonstrated excellent thinking and problem solving skills as they discussed how to move the soil safely and prepared the space for planting.
Creative
Linking their activity to their mud kitchen play, the children planted herbs that they will later use in imaginative and sensory experiences.
Emotional
Throughout the activity, the children displayed confidence, perseverance and pride as they contributed to a shared project.
After preparing the area, the children weeded the planters, added fresh soil and planted a selection of herbs. This will provide a valuable resource that will enrich their play and learning in the weeks ahead.
