Eco-Marine Clean-Up
On Tuesday St. Bronagh’s Eco-Council joined forces with the Eco-Council from St. Colman’s Primary School, Saval to take part in a Marine Clean-Up along the Rostrevor Coastline. This event was a wonderful opportunity to work together to monitor and collect litter along our shore. Pupils surveys reveal a variety of litter:- plastic bottles, sweet and crisp wrappers, food containers/wrappers, rope, clothes, rags, tissues, a cigarette lighter, plastic bags and our two most unusual finds were a sink plug and a large plastic pipe which pupils think may have floated down the river from a nearby building site.
While gathering around the picnic table in the most scenic outdoor classroom setting in Ireland, St Colman’s pupils shared news that three blue tits had visited the nesting box which had been gifted by Rostrevor Men's Shedders. Saval pupils also shared photos of how healthy their fruit trees in the school currently are. These trees were jointly planted by St. Bronagh’s and St. Colman’s pupils. St. Bronagh’s pupils shared the news that our apple trees bore 3-4 apples when we returned to school in September this year. We also shared photographs of two baby apples currently growing on our trees in our school orchard as well as how our native hedging is growing which we planted at the same time.
It was a very enjoyable and rewarding experience for all involved. It is a great reminder for us all that together we can make a real difference to our world, increase awareness of environmental issues and see the importance of taking care of the beautiful environment around us.
