Children's Symptom Checker

11th Dec 2025

As we move through the winter months, children are more likely to experience common illnesses such as coughs, colds, and other seasonal symptoms. To support parents and carers in knowing what to do when a child becomes unwell, we would like to highlight a very useful online tool provided by the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

The Children’s Symptom Checker offers clear, reliable guidance on a wide range of childhood symptoms. It has been developed by paediatric specialists and is designed to help families make informed decisions about whether a child needs to stay at home, see a GP, attend urgent care, or seek emergency treatment.

The tool is simple to use, available at any time, and gives trusted advice that reflects the symptoms most commonly seen in the Emergency Department at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

We strongly encourage all parents to familiarise themselves with this resource and to use it whenever you are unsure about the best course of action for your child’s health.

We hope you find this tool helpful and reassuring.
