Big Schools’ Birdwatch 2026
Our young people have been taking part in the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch.
The Birdwatch involves children from Primary 1 to Primary 7 watching and counting the birds that visit our school grounds. Liz Farnan, Environmental Educator, helped pupils identify the various species who came to visit our school grounds or spot ones who stopped for some tasty snacks provided by the pupils.
Pupils’ enjoyed spotting a whole variety of species of birds; wood pigeons, pied wagtails, blackbirds, carrion crow, dunnock, black headed gulls, magpies, coal tit and great tit, chaffinches, robins, rooks, jackdaws, wooded crows and our very first wren.
St. Bronagh’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch has become an annual event, that helps give RSPB a valuable snapshot of how school birds are doing in Northern Ireland. With birds now facing so many challenges due to climate change and changes to their habitats, every count matters.
