π³ Tree Planting in Kilbroney Park. π³
On May 1st, we were delighted to join with our Eco-partner school, St Patrick’s Mayobridge, to support Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in planting nearly 100 new trees in Kilbroney Park.
This initiative, supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance the local landscape and create a stronger connection between people and the natural environment. It is a key element in the development of a wider Nature Recovery Network in the area.
Armed with spades and plenty of enthusiasm, our pupils got stuck in; digging, planting and learning as they went. They planted a wide variety of trees including Acer, Alder, Birch, Hawthorn, Cotoneaster, Copper Beech, Whitebeam, and Maidenhair trees.
Guided by council gardeners, the children learned the best techniques for tree planting, starting with cutting a "pizza slice" shape into the ground to mark the spot, loosening the soil and carefully planting each sapling. Alongside practical skills, pupils also gained a deeper understanding of how trees help improve air quality, support habitats for wildlife and pollinators and contribute to the well-being of our communities.
It was a fantastic day of outdoor learning, teamwork, and environmental action. A single tree planting event brought pupils, staff, and schools together for a shared cause and we’re inspired to keep planting for a greener future.
Let’s plant more trees!
